10 punches, these are believed to have been to prove ownership when paying taxes, as this was a large sum of money, and the most common denomination, as compared to the thought that they were bankers marks to test that it isn't a plated fake

While the sun is clearly the sun, it used to be called a wart, however it seems no one mentions the other two orbs. I know nothing about astronomy but I think there's a high chance this is referencing some astronomical event.

NAC AG dates specifically to 144 AD and has this to say "Note To the extent that coin types are a reflection of imperial interests, we can assume there was a concern for the health of the emperor early in 144, when this sestertius was issued. The concern appears to have been reduced by the year’s end, but still lingered in the years immediately following. The inscription SALVS AVG (‘the health of the emperor’) and the image of Salus, the goddess of health, feeding from a patera a snake that rises from the flaming altar, reflect vows made on behalf of Pius’ well-being. It perhaps is no coincidence that in this same year a significant coinage was issued for the emperor’s principal heir, Marcus Aurelius, who is celebrated as ‘Princeps Iuventutis,’ the leader of young men being trained in the arts of war and peace. This emphasis on dynasty is reinforced in this year’s coinage with the celebration of Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius having been designated as the consuls of 145."

It seems possible that this coin refers to Pius's suspension of the collection of taxes and the offering of grants for rebuilding, namely cities in the province of Asia struck by a major earthquake, specifically perhaps Cyzicus, Ephesus, and Smyrna in 152 AD.

Obverse: Legend: ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P COS III Type: Head of Antoninus Pius, laureate, right

Reverse: Legend: CONCORDIAE Type: Pius standing right, holding small statuette of Concordia, clasping right hands with Faustina Senior standing left, holding sceptre; between them stand Marcus Aurelius and Faustina Junior, clasping hands over an altar; SC in ex.

Diameter: 34 mm
Die Orientation: 12 H
Weight: 27.98 g

"This reverse type is perhaps the most enigmatic of all of Antoninus' coins. The overall image is clearly that of matrimonial harmony, as evidenced both by the legend CONCORDIAE and by the male-female pairings. The difficulty, however, lies in the identification of the figures, particularly the smaller pair. Antoninus Pius is clearly identifiable: he holds the small statue of Concordia. He clasps hands with Faustina Sr. who, in her role as Pietas holds a sceptre; each stands on a low daïs, implying a somewhat elevated, though not quite divine status, as exemplar of marital concord. Of the smaller figures, Mattingly conveniently referred to them as a "man and a maid [who] plight their troth." Yet, in the first years of his reign, Antoninus Pius began to undo the dynastic arrangements established by Hadrian. Lucius Verus, though the son of Hadrian's earlier Caesar, Aelius, and clearly the previous emperor's favorite was delayed in his advancement and his betrothal to Faustina Jr. was soon annulled. In his place, Antoninus appointed Marcus Aurelius Caesar in 139 AD ; the following year, the new Caesar held the consulship for the first time. Now, as the clearly-designated heir-apparent, Marcus was without reservation be betrothed to the emperor's daughter, an event commemorated by our coin, and thus signal a new dynastic arrangement. Since Faustina Jr. was still a child, however, the actual marriage was delayed for five years." - CNG

Reverse: Legend: TR POT COS IIII LIB IIII Type: Liberalitas, draped, standing, left, holding coin counter in right hand and cornucopiae in left

Diameter: 17 mm
Die Orientation: 6 H
Weight: 3.11 g

"The occasion of this fourth largesse is recorded by the Ostian fasti for 145 AD: "Annia Faustina was married to Marcus Aurelius. Antoninus Augustus distributed a largesse of 90 denarii per man".. MS" - Harlan J. Berk Ltd. "Liberality is personified by the image of a woman, holding in one hand a tessera, or square tablet, furnished with a handle on which are cut a certain number of holes. These boards were used to quickly count the proper number of coins or other items for distribution to each person. It appears they would be dipped into a container, covered with coins and the excess swept away back into the container. The proper number of coins would fill the holes and then would be dumped out to the recipient. On coins this symbol indicated the prince had given to the people money, corn, and other articles of consumption. In the other hand she holds a cornucopia, to indicate the abundance of wheat contained in the public graineries. Liberalitas is represented as presiding at all congiaria. The liberalities of the Augusti, by which the distribution of their bounties to the people is signified, were of two kinds, ordinary and extraordinary." - Numiswiki

The style of the portrait makes it seem to be an imitative. [The temple] "It was restored again in the late 150s by Antonius Pius,[1] who was perhaps motivated by a desire to be publicly associated with the first emperor.[9] The exact date of the restoration is not known, but the restored temple is shown on coins of 158 onwards,[10] which depict it with an octastyle design with Corinthian capitals and two statues – presumably of Augustus and Livia – in the cella. The pediment displayed a relief featuring Augustus and was topped by a quadriga. Two figures stood on the eaves of the roof, that on the left representing Romulus and the one on the right depicting Aeneas leading his family out of Troy, alluding to Rome's origin-myth. The steps of the temple were flanked by two statues of Victory.[11]"

CC Vermeule suggests the figure is Protesilaos instead of Ares because: "The hero Protesilaos was particularly venerated in Thrace and Thessaly. He was the first Greek to fall at Troy. Vermeule associates such figurative depictions on coins like this one with the Riace bronzes and justifies his identification of the figure with Protesilaos with the fact that Protesilaos, as the founder of the city, points to the ground, while Ares would adopt a fighting stance ("The God of war on the Borghese statue ... does not point downwards""

Roma Numismatics has this interesting tidbit: "This sestertius is part of a series portraying the provinces and struck for the offering of the "aurum coronarium", tributes donated by the provinces to the emperor upon accession and other special occasions. The practice was inherited from the Greeks who bestowed a gold crown on those deemed worthy of public honours and the tributes demanded by Hellenistic kings over the communities they ruled. Under the Romans, such tributes became statutory taxes and probably took the form of bullion utilised by the mint for striking of coins. The occasion provided a propaganda opportunity for Antoninus, who generously remitted half of the tribute to the provinces and Italy. The series of bronze coins, of which this sestertius is a part, commemorates the thirteen regions who presumably gave tribute and/or benefited from the emperors generosity (see RIC 574-596)."

"The provincial coin issues of Antoninus Pius begin early in his reign, circa AD 139, and represent something of a continuation from the similar series of his predecessor, Hadrian. Unlike Hadrian, Antoninus never left Italy over the 24 years of his reign and never saw the vast majority of the provinces depicted, although he did serve as governor of Asia during his senatorial career. Unlike Hadrian's series, where the provinces are usually shown in a submissive pose, those of Antoninus Pius are often depicted presenting a crown – reflecting the tradition of each provincial government sending to Rome a weighty gold crown upon a new emperor's accession. The provincial sestertii of Antoninus are, as a rule, quite rare and difficult to acquire in pleasing grades." - CNG

RIC dates to 141 AD, various auction houses use various dates during Pius's reign, as it isn't the Aeternitas issue supposedly struck 10 years after her death, and Pius had coins struck in her name all the way up to his death, I think all we can say is it was stuck sometime between her deification and his death.

Count of Anjou, France
AR Denier, Angers mint

Dated to the reign of Fulk IV-Fulk V, some have argued as late as the succeeding Geoffrey V Plantagenet

Fulk V would go on to be a crusader under the Knights Templar and eventually King of Jerusalem from 1131-1143

These people are possibly my Great x28, x27, and x26 Grandfathers respectively.

“A bull is depicted with a small star between the horns, and a larger star above its shoulder. In the spring of 360, Julian's troops rose in revolt against Constantius, and proclaimed Julian II as Augustus. The depiction of the bull is fairly well understood. Julian II often slaughtered bulls to Mars, the Roman god of war.

But what do the stars represent? On 4 May 360, Venus joined Mars to form a single bright object between the horns of Taurus (the Bull) as the constellation set in the western sky. Two weeks earlier, Mars was between the horns, and the brighter planet, Venus, rested on the the bull's shoulder . There can be little doubt that Julian saw this planetary conjunction as an omen for his victory and showed it on his coins“

An AR Drachm struck 590-628 AD in Erankhvarrah-Shapur
Obverse: Crowned bust of Khusro II facing right, Pahlavi script to left and right, inside double circle, crescent with star above on four sides in margin

Reverse: Fire altar with attendants at left and right, Pahlavi script to left and right, inside triple circle, crescent with star above on four sides in margin

Diameter: 30 mm
Die Orientation: 3 H
Weight: 4.12 g
The script on the obverse within the circle to the left and right of the portrait translates to something like: "Khusro, may his glory grow"

The reverse script to the right of the right attendant near as I can tell the closest match translates to the Erankhvarrah-Shapur mint. I'm not 100% on this.

The script to the left on the reverse is the regnal year, but I could not match it against the examples on beast coins, which doesn't include every year, but includes several and all the above info which is very helpful with this confusing series.

This coin is propaganda celebrating the conquest of Parthia (modern Iran). On the obverse he is wearing the title PARTH MAX short for PARTHICVS MAXIMVS (meaning the Greatest victor over the Parthians). Note he is also wearing the title ARM short for ARMENICVS (meaning Victor over the Armenians), as in 163 AD they had captured Artaxata, the capital of Armenia. Marcus Aurelius decided to not take the ARM title as he had nothing to do with it.

Marcus Aurelius as "Caesar" under Antoninus Pius

"The Decapolis (Greek: Δεκάπολις Dekápolis, Ten Cities) was a group of ten cities on the eastern frontier of the Roman Empire in the southeastern Levant. The cities were grouped together because of their language, culture, location, and political status, with each functioning as an autonomous city-state. Though sometimes described as a "league" of cities, it is now believed that they were never formally organized as a political unit. The Decapolis was a center of Greek and Roman culture in a region which was otherwise ancient Semitic-speaking peoples (Nabataeans, Arameans, and Judeans). In the time of the Emperor Trajan, the cities were placed into the provinces of Syria and Arabia Petraea; after a later reorganization several cities were placed in Syria Palaestina and later Palaestina Secunda. Most of the Decapolis region is located in modern-day Jordan, but Damascus is in Syria and Hippos and Scythopolis are in Israel."

Domitian was assassinated on September 18th, 96 AD in a conspiracy by court officials. The Senate installed Nerva on the same day, mere hours later, and there is debate whether or not he was in on the plot. A damnatio memoriae (condemnation of memory) was passed on Domitian; his coins and statues were melted, his arches were torn down and his name was erased from all public records. Nerva had a short reign of fifteen months during which he tried his best to gain the support of the citizens and the soldiers, but died of natural causes at the age of 67, however, not before adopting popular military commander Marcus Ulpius Traianus who we know as "Trajan" to succeed him. Nerva was deified by the Senate and his ashes were laid to rest in the Mausoleum of Augustus.

Reverse: IMP CAESAR, A naval and military trophy consisting of the weapons and armor of a defeated enemy on a tree trunk on top of a prow of a captured galley with crossed anchor and rudder

Diameter: 21 mm
Die Orientation: 1 H
Weight: 3.71 g
CNG notes: "The reverse of this denarius depicts a Roman naval and military trophy. Known in Latin as a tropaeum from the Greek τρόπαιον, it typically consisted of the helmet, cuirass, and shields of a defeated enemy arranged on a tree trunk with arm-like branches.

Arranged around its base were additional arms and sometimes bound captives. Here, in place of the additional arms and/or captives the trophy sits on the beak (rostrum) of an enemy warship with a rudder and anchor at its base.

This denarius was part of a series of aurei and denarii that were struck between the autumn of 30 BC and 29 BC and which conveyed a general message of victory and re-foundation.

Sear associated this denarius with a contemporary aureus showing on its reverse a similar trophy housed in a tetrastyle temple decorated with a triskeles in its pediment. The obverse of that coin, a bust of Diana Siciliensis, led him to argue that the aureus commemorated Octavian's important victory over Sextus Pompey at the Battle of Naulochus in 36 BC.

The reverse of this denarius, however, does not specify a particular victor. The most likely possibility is that it commemorates Agrippa's victory over Antony and Cleopatra at Actium the previous September, the final triumph for Octavian, the undisputed master of the Roman Empire."

Commodus was assassinated on New Year's Eve of 192 AD, Pertinax who at the time was serving as urban prefect (I suppose the comparison to modern times would be sheriff) was installed as Emperor on January 1st of 193. The Praetorian Guard (the comparison to modern times here I would say is the Secret Service) expected a large bribe for this gift and when he only paid half and tried to reform them they assassinated him, his reign lasting all of 87 days.

Thus began the "Year of Five Emperors."

RPC doesn't commit to a date beyond the range of Tiberius' reign, but common sense tells us it can be narrowed down quite a bit, clearly it would come about after his son Drusus passed and it would stop being struck after the boys turned out to be garbage. Several auction houses go with this dating of 23-29 AD.

The heads on the reverse are Nero Julius Caesar and Drusus Caesar, both sons of Germanicus, and adopted sons of Tiberius. Tiberius made it apparent that they were to succeed him, since his natural son "Drusus Julius Caesar" had died in 23 AD. History had other plans in mind of course.

The reverse translates to " Nero and Drusus, Caesars, Quinquennial (Duumvirs) of the Victorious Colony Julia Nova Carthago"
