Carsten's Collection
Hi, I'm Carsten, I created this website - and this is my collection!

My collection interests are currently Roman Imperial coins and Greek coins - particularly silver fractions.

However, I have a broad interest in all things Ancient coins, so you will find a great deal of variety in my collection..

Enjoy!
Carsten

This issue was struck to commemorate that the province of Asia had accepted Octavian's victory over Marcus Antonius in 30 BC. But where Aegyptus was a client kingdom, and therefore could be captured per se, Asia was a veteran province already, so the regular CAPTA reverse was probably deemed unsuitable, and the RECEPTA reverse was used instead.

Ashton links this and several related coinage issues to the period immediately after the great earthquake that struck Rhodes circa 229-226 BC.

The city and port were devastated, and the great bronze Colossus beside the harbor was demolished. Greek states all over the eastern Mediterranean shipped in relief supplies, with Ptolemy III of Egypt being particularly generous. The Zeus head may reflect an Egyptian connection - the Rhodians honoring their benefactors.

L Thorius Balbus was a moneyer who hailed from Lanuvium, where there was a cult of Juno Sospita. Cicero describes him as a man who lived in such a manner that there was no pleasure, no matter how rare, that he did not enjoy. He was possibly the son of M. Aclius Balbus (168 BC).

The cognomen 'Balbus' literally means 'stammerer', and was used to denote a particular branch within a Gens.
