Alexandria - A settlement in Egypt
Alexandria was founded by Alexander the Great in April 331 BC as Ἀλεξάνδρεια (Alexandria).

In 30 BC Octavian defeated his rival Mark Antony, deposed his lover Queen Cleopatra VII, and annexed the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt to the Roman Empire.

As a Roman mint, Alexandria struck coins for provincal Egypt before becoming a regular imperial mint. It was closed by Leo I, but was reopened by the Byzantines 525 - 646 A.D.
