Coins from Ptolemaic Kingdom
The Ptolemaic Kingdom was a Hellenistic kingdom based in Egypt. It was ruled by the Ptolemaic dynasty which started with Ptolemy I Soter's accession after the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC and which ended with the death of Cleopatra VII and the Roman conquest in 30 BC.

To gain recognition by the native Egyptian populace, they named themselves the successors to the Pharaohs. The later Ptolemies took on Egyptian traditions by marrying their siblings, had themselves portrayed on public monuments in Egyptian style and dress, and participated in Egyptian religious life.

The Ptolemies had to fight native rebellions and were involved in foreign and civil wars that led to the decline of the kingdom and its final annexation by Rome.

Hellenistic culture continued to thrive in Egypt throughout the Roman and Byzantine periods until the Muslim conquest.

Berenike II was the daughter of Magas (king of Cyrene) and Arsinoe/Apama, born in c. 267/6. Berenike II first married or was engaged to Demetrius the Fair (son of Demetrius Poliorcetes and Ptolemais) in c249, as his second marriage, which terminated shortly thereafter by his murder when he was caught in flagrante delictu with her mother Arsinoe/Apama. By him she had no children. Berenike II second marriage was with Ptolemy III (king of Egypt), probably in early 246, by whom she had Ptolemy IV, Magas, Arsinoe III and Berenike, and is presumed to have had an unknown son. Berenike is said to have participated in the Nemean Games and won (between 245 and 241 BC) and to have competed in Olympic games at some unknown date. Soon after her second husband's death in 221 BC, she was murdered at the instigation of her son, Ptolemy IV, with whom she probably was associated in the government.

The mintmark to the left of the eagle on this rare bronze hemiobol of Ptolemy III is a harpē; a type of ancient Greek sword which had a sickle protrusion along one edge near the tip of the blade. Lorber explains that these coins were assigned to Ioppe by Svoronos because the harpē was the weapon of Perseus, who according to myth rescued Andromeda in the harbour of Ioppe. A fun, if slightly irrelevant fact; Ioppe is an ancient port city in Israel that is also known as ‘Jaffa’ and later became famous for it’s delicious oranges. It’s also the name of my cat.
