The Thracians did not describe themselves by name; terms such as Thrace and Thracians are simply the names given them by the Greeks.
Sections of Thrace started to become hellenized before the Peloponnesian War as a significant amount of Athenian and Ionian colonies were set up in Thrace before the war, and Spartan and other Doric colonists followed suit after the war. In 168 BC Thrace became subject to Rome, and in AD 46 a full province.

Overstrike of Thessalonica, 187-31 BC, head of Dionysos with ivy wreath right, goat standing right, ΘEΣΣA_ΛO / N_IK_HΣ, (NE) / ? other monograms, Sear #1466; BMC Macedonia p. 110, 10 - 16. Head of goat and one ivy-leaf under Strymon's head are slightly visible. Imitations from Serdi region weren't used to fool Macedonian traders but as their own currency. This coin is one of overstrikes on official Macedonian coins which prooves this theory.

While previous scholars viewed Skostokos as a dynast who took control of parts of Thrace following Lysimachos’ death, Fischer-Bossert’s die study demonstrates that Skostokos was most likely a local dynast of the environs around Ainos, who ruled under Lysimachos, and was permitted to strike Lysimachi beginning late in the king’s reign. Current scholarship suggests he ruled from circa 285/4-273/2 BC (see, e.g., E. Paunov, “Introduction to the Numismatics of Thrace” in J. Valeva, et al., A Companion to Ancient Thrace, p. 280, fig. 18.4). Skostokos apparently continued to strike Lysimachi in the chaotic period following the latter’s death, before Seleukid authority could be established in Thrace. Notes: Iridescent tone. VF. Very rare.
