Coins from Gallia
Gallia, region west of Rhine and Alps - roughly modern France, Belgie, Luxembourg, most of Switzerland and parts of Germany and Netherland - was subjugated by the Roman Republic in a series of campaigns which started in 121 BC, and finished with Julius Caesar's Gallic Wars from 58-51 BC.

In 22 BC, the region was reorganized resulting in 4 distinct provinces; Gallia Narbonensis, Gallia Aquitania, Gallia Lugdunensis, and Gallia Belgica. The provincial capitals were Narbo Martius (Narbonne), Burdigala (Bordeaux), Lugdunum (Lyons), and Durocortorum (Reims), respectively. In 83 AD Germania Superior and Germania Inferior were separated from Belgica. Their Capitals were Mogontiacum (Mainz) and Colonia Agrippinensis (Cologne) respectively.

Culturally, Gallia was divided into Gallia Comata, literally meaning ‘long-haired Gaul’, and Gallia Bracata ‘trousered Gaul’, which refers to the use of bracae (‘breeches’) in Gallia Narbonensis. During Late Antiquity, Gaulish and Roman culture amalgamated into a hybrid Gallo-Roman culture. The Gaulish language was marginalized and eventually extinct, being replaced by regional forms of Late Latin which in the medieval period developed into French and Occitan.

The Altar of Lugdunum and the Sanctuary of the Three Gauls were dedicated by Augustus on 1 August 10 B.C., the very same day Drusus' son, the future emperor Claudius, was born in Lugdunum. All the notable men of Gaul were invited. Caius Julius Vercondaridubnus, a member of the Aedui tribe, was the first priest of the new imperial cult. The altar, which was engraved with the names of 60 Gallic tribes, was featured prominently on coins from the Lugdunum mint for many years.

C. Annius T.f. T.n. Luscus and L. Fabius L.f. Hispaniensis, mint in north Italy. Moneyer apparently used Anna Parenna as a pun to his name Annius. It is the only known depiction of Anna Parenna whose identity is very complicated. "An older myth tells that Anna Perenna was an old woman from the city of Bollivae in Latium. The myth tells that Anna Perenna brought bread and cakes to the Plebeians who wanted to separate from Rome because of their unequal status as Plebeians in 494 BC and so she saved them from starving. This is why she was popular on the common people and considered as goddes after her death. A later tradition from the time of the myth of Aeneas made Anna the sister of Dido. After Dido has committed suicide and Carthage was conquered she had to fly. A heavy storm throw her to the coast of Latium at Laurentum where Aeneas was the ruler. Aeneas and his companion went to the beach and he recognized her and took her to his palace. In a dream Anna was warned to be alarmed at the traps that Lavinia, Aeneas' wife, would set for her so she fled from the palace. While she was wandering she met Numicius, the god of a nearby stream who carried her off to his bed. The servants of Aeneas searched for Anna and followed her tracks to the river bank a shape rose from the water and revealed to them that Anna had become a water nymph, whose new name, Perenna, signified eternity. Aeneas' servants in their joy scattered among the fields and passed the day in feasting and festivities, which became established as an annual celebration of the festival of Anna Perenna. There is another opinion too that she committed suicide by drowning in the river Numicius because of her desperation. In another myth she was an old woman again. Mars was fallen in love to Minerva, sworn virgin. Mars asked Anna Perenna for interceding on his behalf. But instead of this - knowing about the impossibility of his wishes - she dressed herself like Minerva and came to Mars veiled. When he tried to kiss her she lifted her veil, break out in laughter and mocked Mars. Minerva's main festival, the Quinquatrus, was celebrated 4 days after the festival of Anna Perenna so this could be reason of this story." from Jochen's coins of mythological interest.

The head on the figure of Aeternitas appears to be animal-like, whether this is by accident or deliberate is up for debate! Some have suggested it may reflect the personal religious standing of the engraver (perhaps it is Roman-Egyptian hybrid; some have suggested the head looks remarkably like Anubis). A week before I bought the coin the following discussion appeared online: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/fascinating.314418/ Whatever the story behind it, there are few, if any, coins of Florian like this one out there.

Count of Anjou, France
AR Denier, Angers mint

Dated to the reign of Fulk IV-Fulk V, some have argued as late as the succeeding Geoffrey V Plantagenet

Fulk V would go on to be a crusader under the Knights Templar and eventually King of Jerusalem from 1131-1143

These people are possibly my Great x28, x27, and x26 Grandfathers respectively.

Gratian was just seven years old when his father, Valentinian I, made him co-emperor of the western Roman empire. Following the sudden death of his father, Gratian, now sixteen, found himself solely in charge. He was an early supporter of Christianity and did his best to stamp out old Pagan traditions wherever possible. This beautiful siliqua was minted in Augusta Treverorum (modern day Trier in Germany), which was operational from around AD 291. On the reverse, under the figure of Roma, we can see the mintmark TR for Trier. This is followed by PS, for pusulatum, and indicates that the metal is refined silver. Over time the coin has toned and developed a stunning rainbow-like iridescence. Ex. Naville Numismatics, Auction 32; Lot 584

GENIO POP ROM=" To the genius (guardian spirit) of the people of Rome"

BTR is a bit strange and I belive it is an engraving error as only PTR exists for this which follows perfect logic as in the west officina were "numbered" via the first letter in the Latin words for first, second (prima, secunda) etc., and in the east they did the same but with the Greek words (alpha, beta) etc.

There is also substantial die wear causing the first four letters of the obverse inscription to be almost entirely missing when striking the coin.

"George Rogers in his study of the triumviral coinage in Gaul ("Notes sur des rapports métrologiques: un système monétaire en Gaule de 43 à 23 av. J.-C.," RN XXVIII [1987], pp. 83-93) supposes that this issue was struck under the governorship of Lepidus in 44-42 BC, and that Lepidus was the founder of the colony of Cabellio. He further argues that the absence of the legend COL (indicating the status of the city as a colony) in combination with CABE is not an argument against his proposition, but rather he draws parallels with the foundation coinage of Lyon to support his position."

Following a succession of stop-gap emperors, the empire was beginning to fall apart and a breakaway state in the west, the so called “Gallic Empire” was formed. It included the German, Gallic , Spanish and British provinces and lasted for almost fifteen years. That it was able to endure for this length of time is a testament to the temporary weakness of the central government in Rome brought on by successive military catastrophies and failed economic policies of the preceding decades. It’s first emperor was Marcus Latinius Cassianius Postumus. Whilst Gallienus, ruling from Rome, debased the coinage to the extent that it’s silver content was negligible, Postumus maintained a higher standard of silver content in the coinage issued from his mint in Cologne. Furthermore, the portrait quality of his coins were frequently superb (although he does look a little like Santa Claus wearing a crown, doesn’t he?) and the reverse types interesting. This particular coin type, with the reverse depicting a bow, club and Skythian quiver, is rare - particularly in this state of preservation. Even rarer is a version of the coin depicting Postumus as Hercules, facing left and wearing a lion skin over his shoulder. A beautfiful specimen hammered at UK auction for £8,000 in 2020.

Silver Denier as Duke of Aquitane. Richard I (1157-1199), known also as Richard the Lionheart, was the second son of Henry II. He became Duke of Aquitaine and Count of Poitou in 1172, but was later forced to surrender Aquitaine to his mother, Eleanor by 1185. Richard became King of England on Henry's death in 1189, but spent little of his reign in England, because he was either on crusade or held prisoner. He was killed at the siege of Chalus in France in 1199.All of the coins minted in England during Richard's reign are of a design introduced by his father and carry the name Henry. The only coins to have Richard's name on them were minted in France.

The coins struck by Richard the Lionheart in his French possession are the only coins to bear his name. His English coinage was struck in the name of his father HENRICVS. Richard I was a key leader in the Third Crusade. He captured Cyprus, and aided in the capture of Acre in 1191 AD. He also defeated Saladin's forces at the Battle of Arsuf in Septemberof 1191, and fought the great kurdish general to a stalemate. He and Saladin finally came to a settlement in September 1192 AD which included an agreement allowing Christian access to Jerusalem. It also included a three-year truce.
