In 30 BC Octavian defeated his rival Mark Antony, deposed his lover Queen Cleopatra VII, and annexed the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt to the Roman Empire.
As a Roman mint, Alexandria struck coins for provincal Egypt before becoming a regular imperial mint. It was closed by Leo I, but was reopened by the Byzantines 525 - 646 A.D.
