Antioch — A settlement in Syria also known as Antioch ad Orontem - Antioch on the Orontes - Theopolis
Antioch on the Orontes was an ancient Greco-Roman city on the eastern side of the Orontes River.

To some extent the Roman emperors tried to make Antioch an eastern Rome. They built a great temple to Jupiter Capitolinus, a forum, a theater, a circus, baths and aqueducts. The city was, however, repeatedly damaged by earthquakes.

Antioch struck coins for provincial Syria before becoming and imperial mint. Dates of operation: 217 - 611 A.D.

Mintmarks: AN, ANT, ANTOB, SMAN.

Modern location: Antakya, Turkey

This coin has an unusual reverse legend ‘VIRTS EXERCITVS’ instead of the usual ‘VIRTVS EXERCITVS’ expected for it's type. There does not appear to be a space for the missing ‘V’ in the legend, and likely is a result of minting error. The coin itself was bought as part of a group lot that included 3 Roman glass flasks, a small amphora and a terracotta oil lamp. They were supposedly all found in the same location in Israel, although I cannot validate this.

A rare left bust coin with none same recorded in acsearch and just one left bust (with shiled) variety recorded in CNG Electronic Auction 181 in 06.02.2008 Lot 238 realized then $260 + buyers fee - and still not the same variety. As noted in the book by Getzel M. Cohen "The Hellenistic Settlements in Syria, the Red Sea, and North Africa", the statue of Kalliope in the fashion of the Tyche of the city being crowned by Seleukos and Antiochos (Malalas 11.276) reappears - with significant modifications - on coins struck by Severus Alexander. On the reverse of the coins we see Tyche of Antioch in the centre; on the left a standing Tyche, holding rudder and cornucopia; on the right a figure in cuirass, crowning the Tyche of Antioch. The latter figure probably a Roman emperor, undoubtedbly Severus Alexander himself, rather than Seleukos.

Forum Ancient Coins note: "Struck to pay Titus' legions during and after the First Jewish Revolt. RPC notes c. 320 different dies indicate 6,500,000 Syrian tetradrachms might have been minted. This was the quantity Titus would have needed to pay his four legions. Hoard evidence finds many of these types in Judaea confirming they were used to pay the legions."
